Just like in fashion, every year new wedding trends appear and then disappear again into the background. From locations to attire, to style, the wedding game is constantly changing. To learn about what trends are hot in 2017, we caught up with top wedding photographers from all of over the country to hear what wedding trends they’re seeing pop up.

Here are some highlights of their answers, hopefully, they can help you with your wedding planning:

“When it comes to wedding trends… I definitely see more and more couples requesting bridal portrait sessions in the days following their ceremony. This allows them to have more time with their guests on the day of their event and end up with EPIC imagery that would not be achievable on their big day!”

“More and more people are requesting digital files because of the ease of access, sharing, and the ability to print them themselves” (BB comment – for this end BrideBox Wedding Album was created)

“So far, about 50% of my 2017 weddings were Sunday weddings interestingly! “

Destination weddings, more specifically beach weddings, are becoming more and more popular. This is a way for couples to spend a honeymoon or vacation with just the closest family and friends. Besides, the investment will be less than at a home wedding. “

Below are the full insights that participating photographers shared with us about what they see as current wedding trends:

Drones become very popular in videography, not in photography either. At the same time, people start to spend more money on photography services and ignore the videography.

In technology, wedding photographers sell their DSLR cameras to buy a new line of mirrorless and their compatible lens. The smaller is better. The same thing in videography.

To keep up with the mobile video and photography shared by the guests on the social media at the weddings, the photographers and videographers, offer a little preview in the same day.

Wedding Vintage theme was a trend in 2016 and still continue. That means hiring an old luxury car for a photo session, restaurant decorations or wedding dress.

Photography – With better cameras on cellphones, many local couples are opting for a single professional photographer and allowing friends and family to snap away.

Budgets and Spending – More and more people are requesting digital files because of the ease of access, sharing, and the ability to print them themselves.

GeneralDIY weddings are huge! With Pinterest, more and more brides and bridesmaids are doing the work themselves because of cost, and being craft can be pretty fun!

Personally, as I’m known as the “Adventure Wedding Photographer” I definitely see more and more couples requesting bridal portrait sessions in the days following their ceremony. This allows them to have more time with their guests on the day of their event and end up with EPIC imagery that would not be achievable on their big day! Sometimes this involves hiking up on to clifftops, into the lava flow, or floating out in the ocean.

I get more and more requests for drone photography as couples are loving the creativity of aerial imagery and the unique flavor it brings to their gallery. Especially being in Hawaii, our landscapes and terrain are absolutely stunning and imagery from the air offers a unique perspective one doesn’t usually get to see!

I’ve also seen an influx in clients wanting to stray from the “norm” or “tradition” requesting weddings in very unique locations or during unique events which I support full-heartedly. As I tell all of my clients, “There is no wrong way to do your wedding, there is only YOUR way. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks you should do! Do what feels right for you, what resonates with the two of you and your love story. Stay true to that. After all, this is a celebration of the two of you and your love. Keep it as true to you as possible! If you want to do something totally “weird” do it!!!” YOWO!! (You Only Wedding Once? 😉 Ideally, anyway. 🙂

Desserts: I find more and more clients, straying from the traditional wedding cake and opting for dessert bars, which are totally amazing. Sometimes they’ll have a small cake so that they may “cut the cake,” and sometimes they forego cake all together!!

The overall feel and aesthetic: This is definitely the type of client I tend to attract, but I’ve noticed clients moving into a more earthy realm. This may be anything from being barefoot, to limiting printed products, to serving organic meals, to wearing flower haku… earthy vibrations seem to resonate my weddings and it seems clients are becoming more environmentally conscious on their impacts and resonating with weddings that have a more “down to earth” and REAL feeling.

Food / Beverage: One of my most favorite recent additions I’ve been seeing more and more of are CRAFT COCKTAILS!!! I love this. Clients are hiring not only a bar service but a CRAFT COCKTAIL (Umm Epic) service that will uniquely create specialty cocktails just for their event. My favorite? Stir Beverage!! Chad can be found with his unique garnishes and blow torches, creating the most epic drinks you can imagine. Not to mention his unique bar set up is an amazing addition to any celebration! Couples should definitely check out that option!

2017 weddings from a photography aspect have shown trends in the following areas based on the interactions and experiences of my tropical destination wedding business.

Bookings are made quite closer to the wedding date. About 75% of my weddings were booked within 5 months of the wedding and none of these weddings had an engagement session before their big day.

Most brides are quite into “getting ready” shots. About 75% of my brides were quite interested in having shots taken of them while they were getting ready and makeup applied.

No dress was locally bought or designed for any of my 2017 brides. 100% of these brides bought new dresses online and made minor fitting adjustments locally by a professional.

Technologically, Wi-Fi on digital cameras is becoming quite an interesting request. About 25% of my brides requested at least one photo taken during the event to be transferred wirelessly to their social media accounts. Those brides made it clear that if a wireless transfer to their mobile phone was not possible, a “decent” shot from my phone transferred immediately would suffice.

So far, about 50% of my 2017 weddings were Sunday weddings interestingly!

Venues:
Destination weddings, more specifically beach weddings, are becoming more and more popular. This is a way for couples to spend a honeymoon or vacation with just the closest family and friends. Besides, the investment will be less than at a home wedding.

Technology:
Photographers are changing the tools they use at the time of the shooting. Mirrorless cameras are becoming more popular among us. Thus, giving us a lighter camera (our backpacks became lighter as well and our backs will thank us), but the best part of this is that the quality is as good or better than the older systems.

Photography:
We are considering the use of drones for our photography – in general, it is more used in a video, but has some applications in photography anyways. Still, just one bride of 50 is asking for this service for this reason and because of the little use that the drone has in photography, I don’t see the need for making the investment on this (plus you will need an extra person at the wedding for flying it).

General:
Some years ago prints and albums were a must for closing a contract with the couple. Today everything has changed, they just want digital delivery and the right for printing their own pictures. There are so many online services these days offering albums so that is something they do also by their own.
